They say that ‘The sun shines on the righteous’ and this was certainly the case for those attending the Lions Club of Morpeth three day book sale. As the sale took place outside in the Market Square, weather was always going to be a major factor.
Blessed with that fine weather, people living and visiting Morpeth were met with stalls laden with over 12,000 books covering a multitude of subjects. At only £1 a book every purchase was a bargain. This got better on the final day when the public were invited to pay £5 for a large strong carrier bag that they could fill with as many books as they could fit in. By 7pm on the Sunday when all the books had been safely stored away, the heavens opened – Blessed indeed!
Organising Lion Les Sage said ‘We are so grateful for all the support this event has received. As Morpeth Chamber of Trade sponsored the stalls, every penny taken will help meet local needs – particularly in the lead up to Christmas. Obviously we are indebted to the public for raising a magnificent £4,072; however without the presence of all available Lions, our friends in Morpeth Rotary Club and a number of contacts who class themselves as ‘Friends of Morpeth Lions’ we could not have run the event.
I have been asked ‘What will happen to the remaining books? Well, we intend holding onto and storing up to 5,000 books – so watch this space for further events. The rest will be taken up to Alnwick Lions Club bookshop where they will earn money. So, to everyone who so kindly donated books ‘Thank you’ and know that your generosity will help those who are not so fortunate’.
For his part, Lion President Les Brindley who led from the front said ‘Les has covered most aspects of what I would want to say. However he failed to mention that it was his inspiration to organise this event that brought it about. So a big ‘Thank you to Les and to his small team of helpers who took on the mammoth task of sorting through the books.’
